"I never expected to be that woman. Her. But I am."

It was entirely coincidental that this morning my friend linked to a blog (of his friend's) written from the point of view of a parent bringing up a child with disabilities.

A Day in the Death of Joe Egg which opens soon, is about just that (amongst other things). After reading A Drake's Progress, I was struck by how well the writer, Carolyn disected every day occurrences in their lives using wit, music and love, or as she puts it:

"it's either this, or I'll have to express it through the medium of interpretive dance, and no-one wants that"

I'd definitely recommend reading Carolyn's blog to get an insight into living with disability. From trips to Adventureland for kids (AKA Dante's circle of hell), the creation of T-shirts in response to stares in the supermarket, pimping rollators and finding time to celebrate the small achievements...it'll make you smile, and there's not enough smiling in the world! Some 6 years ago, Carolyn wrote an article for The Guardian and since starting her blog has attracted the attention of other parents coping with disabilities.

Because it was written in the 1960s, A Day in the Death of Joe Egg will raise debate about terminology, attitudes and what's considered acceptable nowadays. It's interesting to read a contemporary take on terminology such as Carolyn's post Ripples.

Thanks Carolyn for sharing your experiences.
